Traffic was at a standstill on the M56 eastbound between junctions 15 and 12 due to a major car blaze.
The fire engulfed the diesel grey BMW and emergency services were alerted to the scene near junction 14 at 1.40pm.
No injuries were reported. All carriegways have now reopened.
The blaze also spread to a nearby crop field, affecting a 30-metre by 20-metre section.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service attended and put out the blazes using two hose reels and one breathing apparatus. Firefighters are now checking the area for hot spots.
According to the Traffic England website, drivers using the M56 are told to expect delays of two hours. One lane has reopened on the eastbound carriageway.
