JON MCCARTHY has pleaded with supporters to forget the past and back him, his team and the club heading into next season.

The Chester boss can expect a rough ride from some sections of The Deva faithful as the season ends at home to Boreham Wood on Saturday.

The Blues have escaped relegation by the skin of the teeth but McCarthy – in his first full season as a manager – said his directive from the board was to stay up.

With the club’s budget for next season still to be determined, McCarthy insists that he is the right man to take the club forward.

“We need everybody to know what’s going on at the football club. We’re not Chester City any more and people need to forget that.

“We’re Chester Football Club and we can reach the heights that historically this club has had. We know what direction we’re going in and we’ve proven it now over two years.

“I’ve proven that I can keep this club up twice in difficult circumstances and I’m in the best position to do it again next year.

“I’m more experienced and I know what the challenges are and I understand the football club. I love being the manager here and I’m proud to be the manager.”
