BOMB disposal experts were called to a house in Ellesmere Port following the discovery of gunpowder.

Police officers and an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team attended a property on Thamesdale at 2.39pm on Friday (March 6) before safely detonating the cartridges in a nearby field.

A Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: "Police were called to an address in Thamesdale in Whitby to dispose of gunpowder.

"Police attended and EOD assisted by removing the gunpowder and burning it off in a nearby field. The cartridges were then taken away by EOD to be disposed of."

Cheshire police's official Whitby Police Twitter account posted: "Controlled detonation of gunpowder around Thamesdale this afternoon by military colleagues in EOD, after the discovery of some old explosives.

"The explosives were quickly disposed of and nothing to worry about."

Gunpowder, which is also known as black powder to distinguish it from modern smokeless powder, is the earliest known chemical explosive.
