A ONE-WAY traffic system will be in place on Civic Way until October as a result of the work to create new state-of-the-art bus shelters in Ellesmere Port.

Construction work on the town's new bus zone got under way last month and the latest phase of the project will see a temporary one-way system implemented from Monday, July 20.

Drivers will only be able to travel along Civic Way when entering from Wellington Road and heading towards Whitby Road. The road will be closed the opposite way.

This will be in place until mid-October.

Councillor Karen Shore, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Strategic Transport, said: "We are working with businesses along Whitby Road and surrounding the construction trying to keep disruption to a minimum but all construction projects by their nature will create some inconveniences.

"I’d like to thank residents and businesses for their patience. 

“The project has experienced only a minimum delay due to coronavirus and it’s good to see the construction fully underway.

"We expect this phase of the works to be completed in October. Once buses move to Civic Way, work will start at the old bus station."

Chester and District Standard:

The work is part of a £16m project to create a new public services hub (pictured above).

Once the new bus zone is in operation it will enable the demolition of the current town centre bus station in the autumn, paving the way for the hub which will house more than 500 Cheshire West and Chester Council and Department for Work and Pensions staff.

The existing Ellesmere Port council offices will be demolished to make way for new housing for 'families and young professionals', according to the council.

Building contractors Vinci Construction UK Limited will construct the new bus zone and hub on behalf of the local authority, with coronavirus safety measures in place.

The Government’s Local Growth Fund is funding half of the £16 million project through the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership.
