CESTRIANS are being urged to turn out in force to cheer on more than 4,000 runners taking part in this Sunday's Essar Chester Half Marathon.
Organisers are encouraging people to come out in support of the athletes – and those taking part in the family fun run – and help create a memorable atmosphere.
The half marathon returns to the city after last year's Active Leisure Event was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.
And, unlike the Chester 10k race in July, the easing of Covid restrictions means spectators are allowed to watch the race from the sidelines throughout the 13.1-mile route
Joint race organiser Chris Hulse said: "Thousands of runners will head out from the Racecourse at 9am to wind through the city taking in the Watergate, the Rows and Cathedral before venturing out into the countryside via the Northgate.
"Runners come from far and wide to participate in our award-winning half marathon, joining an impressive local contingent.
"We have a fantastic finish area outside the Town Hall, which produces an atmosphere that is second to none.
"Besides giving much appreciated support to the runners heading down Northgate Street, the spectators undoubtedly share their triumph at completing the 13.1mile challenge."
Road closures to be in place for Chester Half Marathon 2021
He added: "We are delighted to put the chaos of the last 18 months largely behind us and get back to doing what we love.
"We know that many people have been eager to take part in mass participation events again. They will find our socially distanced start both welcoming and reassuring."
It is expected that the runners will raise over £500,000 for charity.
Whilst Northern Lights is the official race charity, a myriad of other great causes are supported by the runners.
The event will remain open for entries until midnight on Saturday, September 18.
Also, all comers are welcome to participate in the 'Family 1 Mile Fun Run' not just those supporting runners in the main race.
