A MAN from Cheshire has avoided an immediate spell behind bars after admitting numerous charges.

John Anthony Smith, of Moss Drive, Middlewich, appeared at Chester Magistrates Court on Wednesday, December 22, where he pleaded guilty to a total of six charges.

The 36-year-old was committed to prison for a period of six weeks but that sentence was suspended for 12 months.

Magistrates told Smith it had been the nature and number of offences as reasons for the sentence, but suspended the term due to the realistic prospect of rehabilitation.

He assaulted a woman in Middlewich on December 19 as well as damaging a window belonging to her.

Smith was also found to be in possession of a small amount of cannabis and while in police custody damaged a cell, for which he was ordered to pay £500 compensation.

Another charge of using threatening behaviour and language against two others on December 19 was also admitted.

All of the offences were committed while Smith was subject of a community order after he damaged a Merseyside Police vehicle in August of last year.

Smith must also pay a surcharge of £128 and £85 in prosecution costs.
