CHESTER-BASED credit card provider MBNA has signed a new sponsorship deal to support the annual Chester 10K run event, set to take place on Sunday, March 13.
Event organisers Active Leisure have announced a new three-year principal sponsorship agreement with MBNA, based in Chester Business Park. They will replace former race sponsors Aldi, who sponsored each Chester 10K since its inception in 2018.
The agreement furthers MBNA’s support of the multi award-winning Chester running events, having been title sponsors of the MBNA Chester Marathon since 2010.
Joint race organiser, Chris Hulse of Active Leisure Events, based in Chester, said: “We’re really excited to be extending our long-term partnership with MBNA and it’s fantastic that they committed to supporting an additional event in Chester.
“We’ve worked with the team at MBNA for the last 12 years, and have established a genuine long-standing relationship with them, so I’m confident they’ll be a great partner for our 10K event too.
“Following pandemic restrictions, we are enjoying getting back to hosting our events; this year’s MBNA Chester 10K is set to be a spectacular race. With more and more people getting into running during lockdown, we’re anticipating another sell out event."
The 10K course starts from the iconic Chester Racecourse. It then heads north-west out of the city, before returning to the heart of Chester City centre, passing the historic Victorian town hall and medieval cathedral, before finishing on Eastgate Street with a spectacular backdrop of the Eastgate Clock.
This year's event returns to its more traditional March slot, after last year's Covid-delayed event took place in baking hot July weather. It'll also see a welcome return to crowds cheering on from the sidelines, after restrictions prevented spectators from watching last year's race, which saw competitors split into four waves.
Victoria Dowd from MBNA Sponsorships said: “We’re excited to be supporting the MBNA Chester 10K, as it really does bring the city of Chester together, as well as encouraging people from all over the UK to take part in organised running events, set themselves personal challenges and get healthier.
“We’ve got a great relationship with Chris and his team at Active Leisure Events, and we’re excited to be able to partner with them on the Chester 10K, which is the first of the famous Chester Triple Series. We’re looking forward to seeing all those taking part at the starting line this spring.”
This year's race, as was the case in 2020 and 2019, is split into two waves, with the elite runners part of the first wave beginning at 9am, and the second wave starting at 9.30am.
Full road closure timings on the day are to be announced.
