ONE of Chester’s most popular sporting events brought Sunday morning excitement to the city streets and surrounding area as nearly 3,000 runners competed in the MBNA Chester 10K.
The 6.2-mile race started at Nuns Road, by Chester Racecourse, then headed out to Mollington and returned to the city centre via Northgate Street to finish in style in Eastgate Street overlooked by the iconic Eastgate Clock.
Joint race organiser Chris Hulse said: “It’s great that we are finally able to move on from all the uncertainty of the last two years and get back to doing what we love.
“We were forced to hold the race in the middle of the summer last year when high temperatures were an extra challenge for the athletes. Happily, with the race making a welcome return to its spring slot in the racing calendar, we had cooler conditions for racing – and the athletes rose to the challenge with many impressive performances.”
Daniel Jarvis of Bedford and County AC produced the fastest time with 30:41 followed by Elisha de Mello of Rugby & Northampton AC (30:54) and Ben Taylor of Pensby Runners (33.18).
Joanna Marsden of Cheshire Dragons was the first woman over the line clocking 36:54; Jordan Foster of Herne Hill Harriers second (38:54) followed by Charlotte Towers of Chester Triathlon Club (39:17).
Brian Green, head of product and planning for race sponsors MBNA said: “We are delighted that we are starting to see recovery from Covid-19 and are able to sponsor and support a great event like Chester 10K as well as the Chester Marathon and Metric Marathon."
Joint race organiser Andy White said: “From what runners have told us it is clear that a massive thank you is due to the local communities, especially those of Mollington and the Garden Quarter for their vocal and enthusiastic support.
“We are thrilled that so many people made the effort to come out to cheer and encourage the runners.”
Chris said: “We would like to thank our associate sponsors, Mitchell Group, High 5, Brecon Carreg, together with Dee 106 and Chester Road Runners for their support. We could not host the event without the amazing volunteers, organisations and groups who give the race its unique and friendly character.”
Active Leisure Events expect their three races this year to raise £1 million overall for Chester based, regional and national causes.
