SHOCKING photos have shown the extent to which a large fire has hit Grosvenor Garden Centre today (Tuesday, June 14).
At its peak, five fire engines were deployed to the scene of the incident off Wrexham Road, Belgrave.
What is understood to be a warehouse at the popular venue has collapsed, while nearby residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution due to the levels of smoke coming from the building blaze.
Two fire engines from Chester, one from Powey Lane, one from Ellesmere Port and one from Malpas were deployed to the fire, which was first reported to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service at 4.01am. In addition, the aerial appliance from Chester was deployed.
Firefighting was paused at 11.15am as specialists have inspected a propane tank on site to make sure it was at the correct temperature. Crews are still expected to be there for some time and two fire engines from Chester and the aerial ladder platform from Chester are still in attendance.
Fortunately, firefighters say the main area of the garden centre was not affected by the fire, but the garden centre and restaurant are closed at least for today (Tuesday).
In a statement, Grosvenor Garden Centre said: "Fire crews are still on site, however we are pleased to report the fire has been extinguished. We are also pleased to report that the main garden centre buildings are all unaffected.
"Sadly, we have lost our warehouse buildings and a large volume of stock. Nobody has been injured and we can report that the fish are all OK!
"We will remain closed until further notice and we will update you when we know more about reopening. Thank you for all your kind messages of support so far, it is very encouraging.
"Today hasn't been easy, but nobody is hurt and buildings can be rebuilt. That's the main thing."
A fire investigation to establish the cause is now taking place.
