ENVIRONMENT Minister Trudy Harrison visited a Chester based company which has helped bring hundreds of highly skilled jobs and apprenticeships to the region.

Mrs Harrison, alongside Liz Wardlaw, the Conservative candidate for Chester in the upcoming by-election, were given a tour of Urenco.

The company, which is an international supplier of nuclear enrichment services and fuel cycle products, has been operating in a major area of the nuclear fuel supply chain for over 50 years and facilitates zero carbon electricity generation for consumers around the world.

Urenco’s base at Capenhurst provides over 840 highly skilled jobs as well as supporting 40 apprentices and graduates to become the next generation of nuclear professionals, with Urenco also currently in the process of recruiting an additional employees to drive forward their new strategy.

Mrs Harrison, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: “The Government’s British Energy Security Strategy is a massive step forward for the nuclear industry, targeting more nuclear energy, as well as renewables, in a quest to produce low carbon power for 95 per cent of all our energy needs by 2030.

“It’s great that companies such as Urenco are leading the way in the industry as well as bringing many highly skilled jobs and apprenticeships to the region.”

Mrs Wardlow said: “Urenco is a fascinating company, which is a great success story for the British nuclear industry, so I was delighted to bring the minister here to show her around.

"I want to see more highly skilled jobs brought to Chester and companies such as Urenco are helping to encourage the business growth which we need here and one which I will push to see brought about if elected as the Conservative MP next week. “
