ELLESMERE Port's National Waterways Museum has announced a raft of new events for the summer months.
Located on the banks of the Shropshire Union Canal and part of the Canal & River Trust, the museum celebrates the rich history of the waterways which were once the lifeblood of the UK's economy.
What was once a noisy, bustling hub is now an area of calm tranquillity, full of winding waterways and overlooked by Grade II listed buildings.
"The National Waterways Museum is more than just a museum," said Ani Sutton, Destination & Attraction Manager. "It’s a living, breathing part of the UK's rich heritage. The summer programme offers visitors the opportunity to experience it first hand and to learn about the important role that the waterways played in shaping the country's history. It’s also a good day for all the family as we’re child and dog friendly."
The 'living museum' Canal Town days are one of this year's highlights. Visitors can step back in time to experience what it was like to live and work in the docks during the 19th century.
The exhibits include interactive elements, such as dressing up in period costumes, engine and lock demonstrations and trying out traditional canal crafts, like rag rugging and lace making.
Led by knowledgeable and friendly volunteers, the museum's free guided tours provide a fascinating insight into the history of the waterways and the culture of the canal era.
Another highlight is the Medical Marvels Through History event on May 14, where authentically-dressed medics, nurses, orderlies and front-line volunteers from different eras will be re-enacting scenes from the past, with vintage ambulances on display across the site.
The CH21 Home Guards will be tending to the wounded with stretchers and period first-aid kits from their military camp, while women from the Cheshire Pals can be found in Porters Row cottages, preparing ‘Comforts for Troops’ including clothing, food, medical services and support for disabled servicemen.
The events are all family friend and treats will be in store on Chocolate Day (July 9) and the Traditional Village Fete (August 20) complete with fairground organ, striker, hook-a-duck, hoopla and coconut shy.
