THE daughter of former Chester MP and author Gyles Brandreth has been selected to represent the Conservatives for the newly-created Chester South and Eddisbury seat.
Aphra Brandreth was announced at the weekend for the seat, which will be created out of splitting the current Labour-held Chester constituency into two and amalgamating it with the Conservative-held Eddisbury seat.
Ms Brandreth said it was a "huge honour" to be selected as the Conservatives parliamentary candidate.
Edward Timpson, who beat former incumbent Antoinette Sandbach in 2019 after she defected to the Liberal Democrats, announced he would be stepping down at the next election, likely to be late in 2024, to focus on legal work supporting vulnerable children.
It will be Ms Brandreth’s second attempt at entering the House of Commons after she lost to Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey in Kingston and Surbiton at the 2019 election.
She was selected to be the candidate by Cheshire & Wirral Conservatives.
“Congratulations to Aphra Brandreth on her selection as our candidate for Chester South and Eddisbury," Cheshire & Wirral Conservatives said.
Ms Brandreth said: “It is a huge honour to be selected as the Conservatives parliamentary candidate for Chester South and Eddisbury.
“Thank you to the local association and members for your all support.
“I’m looking forward to working with you and for you.”
Gyles Brandreth, who was MP for Chester from 1992 to 1997, is a renowned author and media personality appearing on television and radio shows such as QI and Just a Minute.
He congratulated his daughter on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, praising her "integrity, intelligence, cool head and kind heart", adding they were "all her mother's qualities".
