A NEW "traditional" café has opened in Wirral.

Gemma Gordon, from Egremont, and her mum Debbie Cosgrove, decided to open Elsie’s Bakehouse & Tea Room in New Brighton, following Debbie's early retirement.

Debbie, 61, was "ready to come out of corporate life" but not "fully ready to retire" so Gemma suggested opening a café for Debbie to run.

Elsie’s Bakehouse & Tea Room, on Seabank Road, is named after Debbie's mum and Gemma's nan, 80-year-old Elsie, who Gemma explained is a "larger than life character".

Gemma, 41, said: "I live in New Brighton so I frequently see Seabank Road.

"It's a really vibrant community and when we saw a premises had become available, it screamed out a traditional offering in the area.

"We've gone for an atmosphere that feels like you are coming home, it's warm and inviting and serves traditional home cooking."

The team of around eight people, with Gemma's help on the branding side of things, are offering breakfast and lunch dishes, fresh pastries, homemade soups and more.

Speaking about Debbie's new job, Gemma said she is "absolutely loving it".

"She's getting to know a couple of the regulars, she's on first name terms with some people now", Gemma explained.

"I wanted to tie in opening the café with my mum's retirement. She finished in her previous job at the end of November, so I wanted it ready for around then.

"Now, I'm sat here looking at the Christmas tree and to think it's all come together in two months is amazing."

Elsie's is open 8am-4pm daily. For more information click here.
