A WEATHER warning for strong winds has been issued for large areas of the UK, including Cheshire West.

The Yellow warning for wind is set to come into force on Thursday, December 21, and will affect the whole of Scotland, the North West and North East of England, parts of the Midlands and East Anglia, and parts of North Wales and Northern Ireland.

Strong west to northwesterly winds are likely to develop overnight Wednesday into Thursday, with peaks gusts of 50-60mph expected in several areas.

In some locations, such as those near the coast, there is a chance that winds could reach speeds of 70-80mph.

The Met Office say that the weather will affect a wide area throughout the day and has the potential to cause travel disruption.

Residents are being advised to expect the following:

  • There will be a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected.
  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.
  • There is a slight chance of power cuts, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.
  • There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.
  • There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris.
  • There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close.
