DISCUSSIONS about the potential sale of a Cheshire golf club to Manchester United are not taking place, according to its owners.
American Golf, which owns High Legh Park Golf Club, deny talks are being held with the three-time European champions.
It comes following reports in the Daily Mail the Red Devils had been looking to buy land for a new state-of-the-art practice facility.
The Mail added 'preliminary talks' had taken place about the High Legh club, but an 'agreement hadn't been reached'.
“No conversations between High Legh Park Golf Club and Manchester United are currently taking place,” said a spokesperson for American Golf.
It is understood United are looking for sites in excess of 100 acres as they plan a move away from Carrington, which has been their base since 1999.
As such, High Legh Park would have fit the bill, currently home to an 18-hole championship course, a nine-hole course, a 24-bay floodlit driving range, a retail store, a clubhouse bar and a restaurant.
It was purchased by Warrington-based American Golf in 2021 but put up for sale last year, the Mail reported.
The project is being overseen by United’s chief operating officer Collette Roche, who joined the club from Manchester Airport in 2018.
In 2022, Roche brought in the former Leicester City infrastructure director, Mags Mernagh.
Mernagh designed the Midlands club’s 185-acre training ground, which itself was built on a former golf club.
Today it comprises 14 pitches, a nine-hole golf course and various specialist facilities.
It is not yet clear who will fund such a project, should United go ahead with the move.
Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe is due to purchase a 25 per cent stake in the club, giving him control of football operations.
While he has promised to spend big on Old Trafford, it is uncertain if he would be responsible for funding the team’s training facilities too.
