A GIRLGUIDING group from Ellesmere Port will be able to practice their camping skills thanks to a donation from a housebuilder.
The 2nd Great Sutton Rangers welcomes girls aged 14-18 years old. The group, which meets weekly at Hope Farm Methodist Church, had wanted to go away on an overnight stay to experience the outdoors, apply their camping skills and learn how to cook.
Money from Redrow’s Ledsham Community Fund will now allow the group to do so, covering the costs of the residential trip, and activities including an archery session, bushcraft, fire lighting and den building.
Debra Millican, lead volunteer for the Rangers, said: “One of our leaders would like to complete her Girlguiding ‘Going Away’ licence that will give her the skills and qualification to take young people away on residentials. So we will use the trip, paid for by Redrow, towards this licence.
“In preparation for our trip, we will undertake camp skills sessions during our weekly meetings so girls will learn fire lighting, cooking on open fires and gas stoves, tent pitching and camping equipment maintenance.”
Meeting each week means that the group, which currently has 11 girls and four leaders, is also working to tackle anxiety stemming from the Covid pandemic when activities and schooling for young people was restricted.
Caroline Thompson-Jones, area sales manager for Redrow NW, said: “The Rangers is such an important group as it offers teenage girls a chance to enjoy and experience activities that go beyond those they may learn at school or in their everyday lives. The camping and indoor residentials will help the young people with their physical and mental health, life skills, teamwork and confidence and will prepare them for life post-school. We’re really pleased that we could help this group.”
