Cheshire Military Museum has unveiled a fascinating exhibition delving into life around the Regimental Mess.
Showcasing not usually displayed items, the new temporary exhibition explores the traditions, custom meals, attire and entertainment of the Officers’ Mess in the armed forces.
The term 'mess' in the military world signifies 'food for one meal', known as a canteen or cafeteria outside the forces.
The Mess provided not only meals but also recreational facilities and sometimes accommodation for officers.
In the heart of Castle Square, Chester, the exhibition offers an intimate look at ceremonial dinners and celebrations held in this unique setting.
Visitors can acquaint themselves with the Regimental tradition of the Tappers Cup and rules of the Mess.
Curator at Chester Military Museum, Caroline Chamberlain, said: "The exhibition includes objects which are not usually displayed in the Museum including a number of caricatures of Cheshire Regiment Officers some from the late 19th century and others which are more recent.
"We have also designed the exhibition to be appealing for children as well as adults with special activities for them to do.
"Younger visitors can have their own (pretend) tea party, create their own menu for the day and identify the pickle spoon!"
Dubbed 'What a Mess!', the exhibition carries on to July, welcoming visitors on Thursdays to Sundays, 11am to 4pm with last entries at 3.30pm.
