Major roadworks will lead to overnight closures for the A55 in Chester over the next 10 weeks.

National Highways has said the roadworks will affect the A55 Expressway between Junctions 38 (Posthouse Roundabout/A483) to Junction 40 (Littleton Roundabout/A51) and will begin on Thursday, May 23.

Over the course of the 10 weeks, workers will be improving the road surface on both carriageways.

A spokesperson for National Highways: North West said: "Our work involves resurfacing and replacing road markings, road studs, traffic count loops and bridge joints. We’ll also be taking the opportunity to carry out maintenance work, reducing the need for additional road closures in the future.

"To minimise disruption, we’re working at night when traffic levels are lower and have planned closures around other road improvement projects taking place in the area.

"Our work is due to start on Thursday, May 23 and is scheduled to finish on Saturday, July 27.

"We’ll be working between 8pm and 6am (extended to 7am on weekends)."

  • Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 June - A55 westbound junction 40 to 39 closed
  • Wednesday 5 to Friday 7 June - A55 westbound junction 40 to 38 closed
  • Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 June - A55 westbound junction 40 to 39 closed
  • Wednesday 12 to Friday 14 June - A55 westbound junction 40 to 38 closed
  • Monday 17 to Friday 21 June - A55 westbound junction 40 to 39 closed
  • Monday 24 to Thursday 27 June - A55 junction 39 eastbound exit slip road closed, with a lane closure on the A55 eastbound carriageway
  • Friday 28 June, Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 July - A55 eastbound junction 39 to 40 closed
  • Wednesday 3 to Friday 5 July - A55 eastbound junction 38 to 40 closed
  • Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July - A55 westbound junction 40 to 38 closed
  • Monday 8 to Thursday 18 July - A55 eastbound junction 38 to 40 closed
  • Friday 19, Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 July - A55 eastbound junction 39 to 41 (M53 junction 12) closed
  • Wednesday 24 to Friday 26 July - A55 eastbound junction 38 to 40 closed

The spokesperson added: "Some nighttime weekend work has been included in our programme. This will enable us to complete as much of our work as possible ahead of the summer holidays.

"During any road closure, diversion routes will be clearly signposted. These routes are suitable for all types of traffic. Please follow the diversions and not your satnav.

"We always aim to work to schedule, but circumstances such as severe weather conditions may mean slight changes occur at short notice. If there are any changes to planned closures, these will be communicated via roadside signage.

"We’d like to apologise for inconvenience this may cause you. Thank you for bearing with us."
