A broken down vehicle is causing miles of congestion on the M56 motorway in Cheshire this afternoon (Thursday, June 20).

The incident has been reported between junction 12 (Runcorn) and Junction 14 (Elton/Chester Services).

The cause is a broken down van and a National Highways traffic officer has been deployed to resolve the issue.

The highways service reports there are five miles of congestion causing 45 minutes of delays above normal travel time in the area, with heavy traffic noted around the Runcorn junction.

Traffic is also seen to be busy on the eastbound carriageway on the approach to Junction 12.
