A PUB once on the verge of closure is now considered one of the country’s best.

The Bull's Head in Mobberley has been named as a finalist at the Great British Pub Awards.

Owned by Cheshire Cat Pubs and Inns, the venue is in the running to be named ‘Best Pub for Dogs’.

Tim Bird, director of the pub chain, said: “We've been leading the pack in the dog-friendly pub scene since day one, earning our stripes as a bona fide doggie institution!

“If dogs could vote, we'd have their paw of approval, no questions asked!

“Over the years, we've rolled out the red carpet for more than 50,000 four-legged visitors, welcoming them with open arms and wagging tails.

“Dogs aren't just guests at the Bull's Head, they're part of the family, woven into the very fabric of our pub's identity.

“Our pub is a haven for both two-legged and four-legged guests.”

The Bull's Head was on the verge of closure 15 years ago before it was taken over by Tim and his wife, Mary McLaughlin.

Since then efforts have been made to restore it into a quintessential village pub.

Today, the venue prides itself on being dog-friendly and even features a ‘Dog Bar’ complete with its own menu, Belgian dog beer, toys and free biscuits.

The Bull's Head also hosts a sausage-catching championship as well as an annual dog show during the Mobberley Village Fete.

It is the second year running that the pub has been named a finalist at the Great British Pub Awards for this category, so this year Tim and the team are hoping to go one further and take home the crown.

Tim said: “Winning the Best Pub for Dogs award would be more than just a feather in our cap – it would be a testament to the tireless efforts and boundless love that our team, all of whom are passionate dog lovers, pours into every aspect of a dog's experience at the Bull's Head.

“From the moment a pup steps through our doors to the heart-warming farewell, each and every dog is made to feel cherished, looked after, and utterly special.

“At the heart of our commitment is the genuine affection and care that our team members extend to our four-legged patrons.”

Tim added: “As part of our hiring process, we prioritise candidates who share our love for dogs, ensuring that every team member is dedicated to creating a welcoming and dog-friendly environment.

“During training sessions, we go the extra mile to ensure that our staff not only learn the ins and outs of our menu and service but also know the names of all our regular dog visitors and their beloved owners by heart.

“It's these personal touches and genuine connections that truly set the Bull's Head apart as a haven for dogs and their human companions alike.”
