GENERAL Election candidates have had their say on the future of a railway station closed for more than half a century.

Beeston and Tarporley Station could soon be brought back into use having been shut since April 1966.

Last year, the Department for Transport officially approved the reinstatement of the station.

With the nation set to head to the polls next week, the Beeston and Tarporley Station Reopening Group has been keen to know whether the candidates for Chester South and Eddisbury would continue to back the project.

Fortunately for them, all six candidates have shown their support.

“We are delighted to report that all of the candidates in the constituency in which the station resides have told us that they are fully behind the project to reopen the station and have pledged their future support and help to progress the project,” said Michael Flynn, chair of the Reopening Group.

“This is great news, and we look forward to working with the successful candidate post-election, whoever that may be, to see the station reborn.”

According to the political forecasting website, Electoral Calculus, Labour has an 82 per cent chance of winning the constituency.

Candidate Angeliki Stogia said: “If elected I will be fully committed to supporting the group and working with our stakeholders and partners to champion the reopening of Beeston Castle and Tarporley Railway Station.”

Rob Herd, of the Liberal Democrats, said: “In principle, I am supportive of the reopening of the station.”

Reform’s Peter Langley said: “Let’s get this over the line.”

Chester South and Eddisbury will be contested for the first time at Thursday’s (July 4) election.

For the most part, the seat covers the former Eddisbury constituency which had been represented by Conservative Party member Edward Timpson since 2019.

Fellow Tory Aphra Brandreth is looking to succeed him.

She said: “I am totally committed to supporting the project.”

Independent candidate Gillian Edwards said: “The reopening of Beeston and Tarporley has my full support.”

Meanwhile, Steve Davies, of the Greens, said: “Of course I support the reopening.”
