THE CONSERVATIVES have won the Chester South and Eddisbury seat with newly elected MP Aphra Brandreth securing 19,905 votes.

In a chastening night for the Tories at large, the victory means that Aphra Brandreth will be the sole Conservative MP in Cheshire West, with Sam Dixon (LAB, Chester North and Neston), Justin Madders (LAB, Ellesmere Port and Bromborough) and Mike Amesbury (LAB, Runcorn and Helsby) also elected.

The count was completed shortly after 5am this morning (Friday, July 5) with Aphra Brandreth beating out Angeliki Stogia (LAB) by 3,057 votes.

Here are the results in full:

  • Aphra Brandreth (CON) – 19,905 votes.
  • Angeliki Stogia (LAB) – 16,848 votes.
  • Peter Langley (REF) – 6,414 votes.
  • Rob Herd (LIB) – 5,430 votes.
  • Steven Davies (GRN) – 2,278 votes.
  • Gillian Edwards (IND) – 1,611 votes.

Compared with the 2019 General Election, the Conservative candidate’s 37.9 percent of the vote share was a 21.3 per cent loss, with Labour gaining 10.6 per cent and the Reform Party making an 11.2 per cent gain.

Voter turnout for Chester South and Eddisbury was the largest turnout in the area at 71 per cent, however this is a six per cent decrease on the previous election.

Former Chester MP and father of Aphra Brandreth, Gyles Brandreth reacted: “I took this snap of my daughter going into the polling station yesterday. I’m thrilled & proud she’s won her seat in parliament. She will work so hard for everyone in Chester South & Eddisbury. She’s her mother’s daughter: simply the best. Congratulations @Aphra Brandreth.”

The election constitutes a landslide victory for Labour, with Kier Starmer’s party securing 412 seats, the Conservatives 120, the Liberal Democrats 71, the SNP nine, and Sinn Fein seven.

Elsewhere, Reform UK, the Green Party and Plaid Cymru won four seats, with the DUP winning five and six Independent candidates also elected.
