THE STANDARD hosted its second annual Education Awards on Friday, July 12, as we celebrated the work of those from Cheshire West’s school community.

At a ceremony at the city’s Hilton DoubleTree Hotel, broadcaster and journalist Lucy Meacock hosted the event which this year featured a special performance from children’s choir and Britain’s Got Talent stars, AmaSing.

We can now reveal our Secondary School Pupil of the Year for 2024, is Cherry Cain of The Catholic High School.

The award, which is sponsored this year by North West Academies Trust, was presented to Cherry by The Catholic High School’s Tom Wilson.

Cherry said that it had been “slightly nerve wracking” to hear her name read out but “amazing” to win the award.

Cherry, who had recently moved to The Catholic High School, added: “[Moving schools] is quite difficult but I am an extrovert so it’s quite easy to make friends.

“But, no, it’s hard with different topics and new areas of study. But you get over it and you have your family and friends and teachers to help you.”

Our winner hopes to study Law and her dream is to one day become a defence lawyer.

“I think that [law] is one of the most important things in our world,” Cherry added.

“It impacts our daily lives. It impacts celebrities, politicians, working class, middle class, upper class, everyone the same.”
