WARRINGTON Bank Quay has been slammed as a ‘hellish landscape’ and described as somewhere that makes you ‘hanker for a strong drink’.
“You wonder what you have done wrong or who you have offended if you get stuck there,” travel journalist Rob Crossan said on BBC Radio 2.
Rob appeared on the Jeremy Vine show on Monday afternoon where he discussed the best five and worst five train stations in the UK, which was published in The Telegraph, after visiting 400 of them.
When asked by Jeremy what the worst station is, Rob answered Warrington Bank Quay before slamming it.
“Have you seen the Terry Gilliam film Brazil, Robert De Niro’s?” Rob asked.
Describing Bank Quay, he said: “It is sort of a malfunctioning, dystopian, kind of hellish landscape of the future.
“You’ve got an abandoned Unilever detergent factory on one side, and car parks and puddles on the other and it really makes you hanker for strong drink.
“You wonder what you’ve done wrong or who you’ve offended if you get stuck here.”
It comes after the Warrington Guardian recently revealed that a huge 67 per cent of services at the station were delayed over the past three months.
In his Telegraph piece, Rob wrote: “Your view on one side will be entirely dominated by the disused Unilever detergent factory; an oleaginous mire of tubes, towers and windowless edifices.
“The view from the other side of the platforms is a car park and a grim row of Victorian terraced houses.
“You’d better get used to looking at both the factory and the houses; a whopping 67 per cent of trains heading here were delayed over the last three months.
Rob said how he believes the best station is Wemyss Bay which is 40 minutes west of Glasgow and the train station you need if you want to get a ferry over to the Isle of Bute.
“You’ve got to go there,” he told Jeremy before describing it as ‘absolutely gorgeous’.
He said how it has a beautiful glass roof, a second hand book shop, an independent café, hanging baskets, and a bar with craft ales.
