AN emergency road closure has been put in place after a tree fell down in a Cheshire West town.

Police were informed in the early hours of the morning a tree had fallen across the carriageway of Soot Hill, near Winnington Bridge, Northwich.

Some cables have also been brought down in the incident.

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) and Scottish Power have been made aware of the incident, with the latter sending out engineers to resolve the issue.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "We were called at 4.39am to reports of a tree which had fallen down across the road in Soot Hill.

"It has also brought some cables down with it. Officers put a road closure in place.

"Cheshire West and Chester Council has been made aware and at 8.43am, Scottish Power arrived at the scene.

A CWAC spokesman said: "This emergency closure was required due to a fallen tree on Soot Hill which has damaged a Scottish Power cable.

"Scottish Power are currently on site to repair the cable and then arrangements will be made for the tree to be removed and the road re-opened as soon as possible."

Scottish Power has been approached for comment.
