Chester youngsters are in for a summer of fun, thanks to a packed programme of activities and events set by Storyhouse.

A series of family-friendly films, theatrical experiences, a summer reading challenge, storytelling sessions, and an array of outdoor activities at Storyhouse and Grosvenor Park are planned between now and September.

500 young bookworms between the ages of four and 12 have already enrolled in the Summer Reading Challenge that runs until August 25.

To join, you need to speak to a member of the staff at the Storyhouse Library.

Those who sign up will receive a free collectors' pack and stickers, and then a certificate and medal when you have read a minimum of six books throughout the month.

Storytime sessions at Storyhouse are also scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays from August 2 to 30.

The Storytelling Room will be hosting two special Story Explorers events on August 7 and 14 for children under five, where interactive activities include reading stories, singing songs, and hunting for clues, all wrapped up with some dancing and bubble fun.

This summer, the children's library, known as The Den, has been transformed into Dorothy's enchanting house from The Wizard of Oz.

Starting from the first Saturday in August, the venue will also host free Crafty Weekends, covering different themes and providing all required materials.

Venturing outside, Storyhouse's summer home in Grosvenor Park will host Rhyme Time sessions on Tuesday, August 6, 13 and 20.

The library team will entertain the young children and toddlers inside a festival teepee.

People will also be able to engage in free Family Crafts in the afternoons on the same dates.

The park invites families with young children to take part in an adventure with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz walkabout theatrical experience, designed specifically for primary school-aged children.

The participants will be taken on a journey around the Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre festival site, meeting characters before reaching a grand finale inside the theatre-in-the-round.

For those aged 12 and upwards, 'The Importance of Being Earnest' will be staged in the open-air theatre from August 9 to September 1.

This outdoor production promises laughter, witty wordplay and dozens of laughs through a tale of playful deception.

Those interested in the backstage workings of theatre can join a Storyhouse Tour and learn all about the transformation of a former Art Deco cinema building into the cultural venue that it is today.

The cinema is also showing a range of films throughout the summer.

Storyhouse’s creative director, Suzie Henderson, said: "This summer at Storyhouse you can experience an exciting mix of activities, many of them free, which are designed to entertain and engage all ages."

She added: "Whether you're a bookworm, film buff, theatre fan, daydreamer or crafting enthusiast, there's something for everyone to enjoy."
