There were some unusual runners taking to the track at this year's Family Fun Day at Chester Racecourse on Sunday.

As well as the usual contenders jockeying for position at the Roodee on a mild summer's day, there was a special race in aid of a worthy cause.

The Pantomime Horse Race had 21 entrants and was not necessarily limited to just costumed horses, with a zebra, a unicorn, a polar bear and a reindeer also taking part over the final furlong.

The charity event was in aid of the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, which provides end-of-life care and support to local individuals and families.

An increasingly chaotic display eventually saw No 13 Humphrey, with 'jockeys' Richard Omoyele and Emmanuel Biolatiri, cross the finish line first, as other competitors struggled to keep themselves together.

In the more conventional feature race of the day, the £50,000 4.05pm Liverpool Airport Faster, Easier, Friendlier Queensferry Stakes, jockey Marco Ghiani rode Quinault to victory.

Aside from the horse racing, there was plenty to keep families entertained throughout the day on the racecourse, with a beach, hook-a-duck, and a visit from Bluey to name a few.

The next event will be on Saturday August 31, the Powells Jewellery Ladies Day, featuring platinum-selling artist Ella Henderson.
