A CARE home in Cheshire West has thanked the community after an appeal for help with a resident’s funeral received an incredible response.

The appeal, which has been removed from social media to protect the privacy of the deceased’s wife, was shared widely this week after it was feared that the man’s funeral at Chester Crematorium next week would be empty.

Dozens of people shared the post, including the Upton by Chester Royal British Legion, as the man is understood to have been an army veteran.

Thousands more people, many of whom are ex-servicemen and women, have also indicated their intention to attend the service.

Katherine Rea, Director of Governance and Compliance for Park Homes UK and linked Director for Winsford Grange Care Home, said that the response had been “massive” and thanked the staff at the care home for their efforts in ensuring that the resident was given a proper send-off.

In a post on social media, she explained: “I have had a lot of direct messages asking why the funeral appeal for attendees and flowers for one of our army veteran residents was taken down. Unfortunately, we had concerns raised with us about the post compromising his privacy as people were naming him.

“I just wanted to come on and explain as I know a lot of people were affected by the post and to say to everyone who commented, donated flowers, offered services and is coming on Monday a massive thank you.

“He will definitely now have the send-off he deserves. We have a local singer performing at the service, a bugler to play the last post, a standard for his coffin and so many flowers. We also have someone from Liverpool sending memorial ribbons for people attending to wear and someone making cakes for the small wake we are having afterwards.

“What an incredible community we have! The whole of Cheshire and people across the country have come together to deliver for this occasion. From all of us at the home THANK YOU.”

The home has also been inundated with donations of flowers and wreaths ahead of the service.
