A points failure has led to a number of Cheshire trains being delayed or cancelled this morning (Thursday, August 22).

The incident has been reported in the Liverpool Lime Street area, with some lines being disrupted as a result.

Disruption is expected until 10.30am, according to National Rail.

Network Rail engineers have been deployed to the site to investigate.

Rail operator Avanti West Coast says all lines are blocked due to a points failure between Liverpool Lime Street and Runcorn. Ticket acceptance is in place with other rail operators for substitute services:

London Northwestern railway will accept Avanti passengers between Liverpool Lime Street and Crewe in both directions. Merseyrail will accept Avanti passengers between Liverpool Lime Street and Chester and Liverpool South Parkway in both directions. East Midlands Railway will accept Avanti passengers between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Picadilly in both directions.

Rail replacement road transport has been put in place between Liverpool Lime Street and Runcorn in both directions.

London Northwestern Railway says trains are terminating at / starting back from Liverpool South Parkway. You can use your ticket with Merseyrail between Liverpool Lime Street and Liverpool South Parkway.

Northern says passengers can use their tickets with TransPennine Express and East Midlands Railway via any reasonable route. They will not be providing rail replacement buses.

TransPennine Express says its passengers can use tickets on East Midlands Railway via any reasonable route, Northern via any reasonable route and/or Merseyrail between Liverpool Central and Liverpool South Parkway.

Passengers are reminded they may be entitled to compensation if they experience a delay in completing their journey today.
