Met Office extend thunderstorm weather warning for Chester

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms was issued yesterday (August 31)  and was set to be in place from 4am until 9pm. 

Now, the warning has been extended to last until 11.59pm on Monday (September 2). 

Unlike the initial warning where only small parts of Chester were set to be affected, all of the city is covered by the warning in place today and tomorrow.

The Met Office have warned that thunderstorms may cause flooding and disruption in places on Sunday

They have told members of the public what they should expect:

• Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
• Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
• There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
• There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Through today, areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to move north across England, into parts of Wales and later into Scotland.

"The extent of these thunderstorms remains very uncertain and whilst many places will miss them, some places may see 30 to 40 mm of rain fall in less than an hour and perhaps over 60-80 mm in one or two places. Frequent lightning strikes and hail will be additional hazards.

"Consider if your location is at risk of flash flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items. 

"Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
