Chester Castle will be opening to the public later this month for a family-friendly event which delves into a turbulent time in the city's history.
As part of the 2024 Heritage Open Days Festival, English Heritage will be opening the gates to Chester Castle and telling the stories of the castle during the Civil War.
Visitors are invited to meet the soldiers, the Calvary horses and learn how women supported the war effort, as well as find out what life was like for civilians.
As part of the free event on September 14-15, visitors can also watch demonstrations and displays or dress up in armour.
They can also visit the fascinating Agricola Tower to see beautiful wall paintings and a second-hand bookshop located in the cells, and take in the views of Chester and the surrounding countryside from the tower rooftop.
Entry is free, dogs welcome on leads. The open days run from 10am-3pm on both Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15.
Also being held as part of Heritage Open Days are a series of free guided tours, with volunteers telling the history of the castle at various stages of its 1,000-year history.
Meet the Civil War Soldier Tour will be on Saturday, September 7, at 11am and 1.30pm.
Meet the First World War Soldier Tour will be on Wednesday, September 10 at 11am and 1.30pm.
Meet the Medieval Wall Painter Tour is on Tuesday and Thursday, September 10 and 12, at 11am and 1.30pm.
All tours are free and last about one hour, but pre-booking is essential.
