Chester South and Eddisbury MP, Aphra Brandreth, recently joined recyclers in Tattenhall to promote eco-friendly ways of recycling blister packs.

Commonly used packaging for items like paracetamol, these packs, made from pre-formed plastic, typically end up in landfill sites.

Each year, a staggering 36 million tons of blister packs are produced globally.

Ms Brandreth met with local advocate, Yvonne Keeping as part of her mission.

She was joined by councillor Mike Jones to learn more about the environmentally conscious disposal of these universal medicine packages.

At the moment blister packs are only recyclable if they are sent to one of two companies.

In collaboration with Tattenhall Parish Council, Ms Keeping and Mr Jones are pioneering a local initiative to recycle these packs through a company called MyRefactory.

Already, 13 recycling boxes, financed by the Tattenhall Parish Council, Mr Jones and Transition Tattenhall, have been sponsored in the village.

On the eco-friendly efforts, Ms Brandreth said: "Protecting our local environment is one of my top priorities and we should be looking at new and innovative ways to make sure we carry out our everyday household habits in a much greener way.

"I am grateful to Yvonne and Mike for championing this local project and I would encourage the community in Tattenhall to support it if they can.

"I am writing to Cheshire West and Chester Council to urge them to get on board."

Addressing the public, Mr Jones said: "If you are not already recycling your blister packs please help our campaign.

"Public collecting boxes are placed in the Post Office, the Care agency on Church Bank and the Library.

"Private boxes are placed at Flacca Court and Tattenhall Homecare.

"Within the next year, we will take the results to Cheshire West and Chester Council with the support of our brilliant local MP.

"I hope that soon the Council will no longer send blister packs to landfill sites and the valuable plastic and aluminium will be recycled."

Ms Keeping added: "After several setbacks, we now have the Blister pack project up and running and have been amazed about the quantity being collected in a small village and are very concerned about the nationwide numbers going to landfill.

"We are grateful for the support from our MP, local Councillor, Parish Council and Transition Tattenhall to address this problem and hope that our project will make a difference."
