Major roadworks in Chester city centre are expected to cause delays and disruption for eight weeks.

Works to improve the junction at Lower Bridge Street and Pepper Street are to begin later this month, after the final Chester Races meeting of the year on September 21 "to minimise disruption".

The works will also take place after the week-long overnight closure required for the initial Grosvenor Bridge repairs will take place from September 16.

A traffic order says the top end of Lower Bridge Street will be closed from the junction with Grosvenor street, Pepper Street and Bridge Street to La Fattoria restaurant for eight weeks.

This will enable junction and traffic signal improvement works to be carried out by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

A diversion route advises traffic to take a detour through Handbridge, via Overleigh Road and via Grosvenor Road.

In addition, a lane closure is planned on Pepper Street and Grosvenor Street, both approaching the box junction, between September 23 and October 20.

The roadworks website for the scheme says delays are "likely".

All roads will be cleared on October 6 for the annual MBNA Chester Marathon and Metric Marathon to take place, as thousands of marathon runners will head down Lower Bridge Street.

Further junction improvement works are soon also due to take place at the junction of St Oswalds Way and St Anne Street, as part of an Active Travel funded scheme to improve connectivity to the city centre and the Bus Interchange. Work is expected to begin on this before the end of the year.
