THREE fire crews were called out to an early morning crash on the M56 near Chester.

One fire engine from Runcorn, one fire engine from Powey Lane and one fire engine from Ellesmere Port attended the scene at about 5.30am today (Monday, September 23).

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were at the scene of a two vehicle road traffic collision on M56 Eastbound between J14-J12.

"There are two casualties trapped and crews worked to release them."

In an update at 6.25am the fire service confirmed one of the casualties had been released and they have been handed over to the care of paramedics and taken to hospital.

At 7:05am the second casualty was released and handed over to the care of paramedics and taken to hospital.

The spokesperson added: "Firefighters will be leaving the scene shortly. Further updates will be added when they are available."
