Almost 200 walkers turned out to take part in a charity walk, braving downpours to help raise thousands for good causes.

The organisers of the Chester Business Club’s annual charity walk had considered calling off the event due to heavy rain.

But after deciding to go ahead, 177 folk and several dogs turned up at Chester Racecourse.

They all helped to raise thousands of pounds for good-causes based across the city.

Jan Chillery, the chair of the Chester Business Club, said: “The annual charity walk has now become one of the highlights of the year.

“The weather was awful, but showers didn't rain on our parade. And to get such a large number of people to show up in such heavy rain was fantastic.”

Peter Broxton, the chair of the charity walk, said: “We had a few soggy walkers and dogs by the end. But the refreshments along the way, and the G&T waiting at the finishing line seemed to help lift spirits.

"The efforts of those who came along will help so many good causes which is just wonderful. I hope we see even more walkers next year.”

The event, on September 15, was co-sponsored by city-based media firm Magnify PR and Chester Racecourse.

Nick Owens, the founder of Magnify PR, said: “It was fabulous to see so many people supporting the event. What I love most about the CBC walk is how it brings people together from across the city and beyond to help raise money for some amazing organisations.

Kate Dawson, commercial director at Chester Racecourse, said: “The Chester Business Club’s annual charity walk is a fantastic community event that we’re always proud to support. It’s a rewarding occasion that sees so many local businesses and people come together to raise awareness and funds for incredible charitable groups and causes.’

The walk was started by Clare Hayward, the current High Sheriff of Chester, who said: “I am delighted to support the Chester Business Club's walk.

"I love the ongoing commitment to local causes by the local business community. The Chester Business Club cares about the people, the businesses and the area. It combines community, charity, enables connections and raises cash for good causes."
