The Chester Philharmonic Orchestra is getting ready to kick off its new season of concerts.

The first concert, set to be held at Chester Cathedral, will take place on Saturday, November 9 at 7.30pm.

The evening will feature compositions by Sergei Prokofiev, Doreen Carwithen, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The performance of Prokofiev's "Violin Concerto No."1" will see the orchestra joined by solo violinist Lucy Holmes.

Ms Holmes, a Royal College of Music graduate, began her violin studies at the age of nine at Chetham’s School of Music.

She discovered her passion for composition during her undergraduate studies and has since completed several notable works.

This includes "Pink Mosaics," an octet for strings, woodwinds, and electronics, "Static Reflections," composed for the Fidelio Piano Trio, and "Blind Dreams," for the RCM String Quartet Platform.

Diana Anderson, chair of the Chester Philharmonic Orchestra, said: "This will be Lucy’s second performance with the orchestra, the first being her performance of Schindler’s List in 2016.

"We are delighted that she is joining us once again, this time, for the first concert of our new season."

The concert will also feature Doreen Carwithen’s "Men of Sherwood Forest," a suite inspired by the legendary tales of Robin Hood.

The piece highlights Ms Carwithen's unique style, combining cinematic elements with English pastoral themes.

The evening will conclude with Ralph Vaughan Williams’s "Job: A Masque for Dancing," an orchestral piece based on the biblical story of Job.

The Chester Philharmonic Orchestra will be under the baton of Richard Howarth for this season's opening concert.

Mr Howarth has had a long career as a violinist and has been in high demand as a conductor in recent years.

He has conducted for the Manchester Camerata, the Ulster Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and several others.

He is currently the principal conductor of the Sale Chamber Orchestra and the Westmorland Orchestra and has recently been appointed conductor/music director of the Blackburn Symphony Orchestra.

He is also a regular guest conductor of the Chester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Wrexham Symphony Orchestra.
