A Chester primary school is celebrating after winning top praise by Ofsted.

While one-word grades are no longer provided by Ofsted, the inspector concluded St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s Catholic Primary in Hoole would likely have received the top grade of 'Outstanding' following their ungraded visit.

School gradings cannot be changed from an ungraded inspection but the inspector suggested that if the inspection were to be a graded inspection that the school would be ‘Outstanding’. The school is currently officially graded as ‘Good’ by Ofsted. Ungraded inspections look at the same elements in a school as a graded inspection.

Pupils of St Werburgh's and St Columba's are proud to be part of a community that fosters happiness and inclusivity. The school’s motto of 'love, learn, laugh' permeates daily life. New pupils are welcomed warmly, and respect is a core value ingrained in every aspect of school life.

The report highlights the exemplary behaviour of the pupils, who play well together and ensure that everyone is included. The inspector also praised the high expectations set by the school, noting that the industrious atmosphere motivates the pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), to achieve across the curriculum.

One of the key strengths of St Werburgh's and St Columba's is its commitment to providing a rich and engaging curriculum.

From the early years, the school prioritises reading, with expertly trained staff delivering phonics lessons that ensure rapid progress. The school’s approach to teaching reading was commended, particularly its ability to support pupils who speak English as an additional language. By the time pupils enter Key Stage 2, most are confident and fluent readers, with a clear love of books fostered throughout their time at the school.

The curriculum is designed to build upon prior learning, ensuring that pupils grasp key concepts and develop essential skills. The school’s teachers, excellent subject knowledge was noted, enabling pupils to confidently share their thoughts and work collaboratively with their peers.

Pupils with SEND are particularly well-supported, and the school has put in place numerous adaptations to ensure their success. The inspection report emphasised how effectively the school identifies and addresses pupils' needs, making strong use of external specialists when necessary.

Beyond academic achievement, St Werburgh's and St Columba's excels in providing pupils with a well-rounded education. The school encourages a sense of responsibility in its pupils, with children eagerly taking on roles of leadership. They engage in thoughtful acts of kindness, such as distributing plants they have grown to local community members.

Kathryn Oates, headteacher, said following the report's publication: “We are incredibly proud of all the children in our school, our staff and the wonderful school family.”
