A major Chester road will be closed in both directions as part of ongoing roadworks in the city centre.

Previously we reported about the works which have led to the temporary closure of the top of Lower Bridge Street, as the existing traffic signal junction was "at the point of failure due to old equipment at the end of its shelf life", according to Cheshire West and Chester Council and needed an "urgent upgrade".

Works are said to be "progressing well", with new traffic signal ducting, chambers and sockets installed, while the revamp includes upgrading dropped crossings, kerbing and tactile paving, to meet current specifications. Carriageway resurfacing will also take place.

However, Sunday October 20 will see Pepper Street closed in both directions between the junction and Volunteer Street. This is to enable engineers to excavate across the carriageway to install ducting for the traffic signals.

Lower Bridge Street is still listed as being closed on October 20 too. Diversions are in place for traffic to be detoured via Handbridge and Grosvenor Road for the Lower Bridge Street closure, and via the ring road for the Pepper Street closure.

From October 21, Pepper Street will be closed in the eastbound direction (ie from the box junction to Volunteer Street), with Lower Bridge Street expected to reopen.

Works are expected to be completed by November 15.

A council spokesperson added: "Unfortunately disruption is unavoidable, we appreciate your patience and support during these works."
