A lecture on spirituality and addiction recovery is set to take place at the University of Chester.

The university will host the event on November 6, at 7pm.

Wendy Dossett, an Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies, will present the lecture titled Transcendence and Community in Recovery from Addiction.

The presentation will be held in the Binks Building, room 107, at Exton Park.

The talk aims to explore the often-debated link between spirituality and addiction recovery, which can sometimes deter individuals from seeking community-based support.

Ms Dossett's research reveals a common ground between the clinical language of addiction treatment and the spiritual language of recovery.

She believes that a lack of understanding of spiritual and religious concepts is a major reason why the system sometimes fails to help those with substance issues.

She argues for the inclusion of religious studies in addiction recovery as part of medical humanities.

Ms Dossett has a strong track record in the field, having led The Higher Power Project and published many works on spirituality in addiction recovery.

She received the Lifetime Achievement Recovery Researcher Award from the UK & Europe Symposium on Addictive Disorders.

A response to her lecture will be given by Dr Ed Day MBE, clinical reader in Addiction Psychiatry at the University of Birmingham and the UK Government’s Recovery Champion.

The event is free to attend or watch online.
