A Chester high school teacher has earned a top award for leading the way in design and technology.

The Bishops' Blue Coat Church of England High School is proud to announce that Simon Hooker, the school’s design and technology leader, has been recognised by the Design and Technology Association with the Autodesk Excellence Award for Outstanding Secondary Subject Leadership.

This award honours Simon’s exceptional leadership, innovative teaching methods, and his impact both within and beyond the classroom.

Simon Hooker’s influence at Bishops' Blue Coat extends far beyond his classroom. Through his leadership, the design and technology department has not only thrived, but Simon has also spearheaded the development of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programmes in local primary schools.

His dedication to fostering young talent has been instrumental in engaging primary students in hands-on STEM activities, helping them explore the world of design and technology at an early age.

Simon has also made significant contributions to the wider community by leading Bishops’ involvement in the Scalextric 4 Schools competition.

This initiative has brought together students from both local and regional schools, inspiring a sense of creativity, collaboration, and healthy competition. His commitment to widening access to technology education and creating opportunities for young people to engage with STEM subjects is at the heart of his educational vision.

The Autodesk Excellence Award highlights those who demonstrate outstanding leadership, curriculum innovation, and a clear impact on student achievement. Simon’s integration of advanced tools like Autodesk software provides students with real-world experience, preparing them for future careers in design, engineering, and technology.

Upon receiving the award, Simon Hooker said: “I’m incredibly honoured to be recognised by the Design and Technology Association.

"This award reflects the collective efforts of the fantastic team at The Bishops' Blue Coat CE High School and our local partners. I’m passionate about helping our students, and the wider community, to explore and succeed in the exciting world of design and technology.”

Headteacher Helen Cairns praised Simon’s contributions, adding: “Simon’s work both in the school and the wider community is truly exceptional. His leadership in the classroom, his work with primary schools, and his role in driving engagement through initiatives like the Scalextric 4 Schools competition have had a lasting impact.

"We are extremely proud of his achievements and the inspiration he provides to our students.”
