THERE are severe delays on the M56 this morning (Wednesday, October 30) due to emergency repair work.
Two lanes are currently closed, resulting in heavy traffic between junction 15 (Stoak Interchange) and junction 12 (Runcorn).
The issue is understood to be an infrastructure defect, concerning a manhole cover.
There is also congestion on the A66 as traffic travels between Helsby and Frodsham.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: "Motorists are warned to expect significant delays on the M56 eastbound to allow for emergency repairs to a manhole cover at Junction 12 (Runcorn).
"Lanes 1 and 2 (of 3) remain closed to enable the repairs to be undertaken safely. The incident was first reported at 7.51am.
"National Highways Traffic Officers remain at the scene. There are presently delays of 90 minutes above usual journey times on the M56 eastbound approaching Runcorn with motorists advised to find alternative routes if possible."
