TRAFFIC brought to a complete standstill in all directions on the A41 outside of Whitchurch because of gas works ‘will not happen again’.

Shropshire Council said it contacted Cadent Gas after being alerted to the obstruction in Grindley Brook on Wednesday, October 30 that left commuters unable to move for around 20 minutes.

Traffic was backed up in all directions for around two miles as workers blocked the single available lane with a vehicle designed for shifting heavy rock.

While the work is vital to repairs in the area, Shropshire Council admitted obstructing the road was against the terms set out for the work and added that Cadent has assured them it would not happen again.

A spokesman said: “Works are currently being carried out by Cadent Gas as part of a gas mains replacement scheme along the A41, Chester Road, Grindley Brook.

“We are aware that the contractor working on behalf of Cadent Gas has caused an obstruction.

“This obstruction is a contravention to the agreement of works taking place.

“We have spoken to the contractor, and they have provided assurances this will not happen again.”

One woman caught up in the traffic, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was perplexed by the hold-up which made her late for an appointment.

“I could see the traffic lights but they just stayed on red and it was really annoying,” she said.

“I know they have to do the work, I’ve no problem with that but it seemed like they were taking the mick a bit.

“They moved their truck a few times but then immediately put it back.

“When we did eventually get through, I could see cars going for miles in all directions – it was just really unhelpful.”
