AN assessment centre run by a private firm of social workers is set to open in Cheshire after plans to convert a house were rubber-stamped.

Halton Council’s planning department has signed off on an application by Accolade Residential to transform the property on Mersey Road, Widnes.

The three-bed terraced house will become a ‘residential family assessment home’ to be run by a registered provider of independent social workers which  specialises in family care.

In its application, the company said it offers services such as social services assessments, one- to-one parenting support, outreach home programmes and family time support workers.

A report submitted in support of the application, said: "They partner with parents and encourage children, where appropriate, to participate in creative direct work and capture this using imagery and analysis.

“Accolade believe that a trust building approach is what children and families need and subscribe to the belief that this approach achieves better outcomes for. Children are always kept in mind and at the centre."

The report said a letter of support was received from Halton Council’s placements officer which said there was ‘a need for this type of service’ in the borough so that it can be ensured that ‘families can stay more local to their communities’.

The applicant’s planning statement added: “The proposed use offers a significant benefit to local services, through the provision of high-quality specialist housing in a sustainable location, representing the effective re-use of previously developed land and direct investment into the local area.”

Granting approval, a decision notice published by Halton Council, said: “The local planning authority hereby permits the above development to be carried out in accordance with the application and accompanying plans submitted by you, subject to compliance with the conditions specified."
