BOTH swimming pools at a city centre leisure centre will close next month as part of a major revamp of the facility.
Big changes to Northgate Arena were announced today (Friday, November 8).
The major makeover will bring fresh facilities and new features for the Chester community to enjoy.
The refurbishment is set to begin with both swimming pools due to close from Monday, December 23, and a partial closure of the building starting from Monday, January 6, until Spring 2026.
Throughout this time the sports hall, reception, and a temporary studio space will remain open.
A temporary gym and fitness class programme will also be available.
A spokesperson for Brio Leisure, that operates Northgate Arena said: "We will be closing the sports hall and gym between December 16-18, 2024, whilst the gym equipment is moved into its new temporary space, which will open on December 19, 2024.
"Brio customers will have the opportunity to access the swimming pools at other Brio leisure centres."

Matthew Parker, managing director of Brio Leisure, said: "“We are incredibly excited about the upcoming refurbishment of Northgate Arena, which will transform the facility into a modern, welcoming space for everyone in our community to enjoy.
"This project wouldn’t be possible without the generous investment from Cheshire West and Chester Council, and we are deeply grateful for their continued support.
“Throughout this process, we’ve listened closely to feedback from our community, local clubs, and members. Your input has been invaluable in helping us understand where improvements were most needed, from better changing facilities to enhanced gym spaces and more accessible features.
“A huge thank you also goes out to our loyal community and members for your patience and understanding as we carry out these important upgrades. We are confident that the wait will be worth it, and we can’t wait to welcome you back to a revitalised Northgate Arena in 2026!”
Cllr Adam Langan, Cheshire West and Chester Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I’m really excited about the upcoming refurbishment of Northgate Arena.
“It’s been a hugely important part of the lives of Chester residents for generations, as well as those that travel from other areas of our borough.
“I remember using the swimming pool as a kid and these facilities are largely the same, so an update is much needed.
“Having access to good quality leisure, health and wellbeing facilities is key, so that people can lead active, happy and healthy lives. It’s part of the Council’s One City Plan for Chester, which puts wellbeing at the heart of the city experience and encourages healthy lifestyles.
“I’m pleased that our Council is able to invest in Northgate Arena so that it can continue to play a part in families’ lives for generations to come.”
