A RENOWNED auctioneer and antiques expert is aiming to help people turn unwanted treasures into auction windfalls.
Charles Hanson, who has made global headlines with his finds, will be offering free antique valuations at Vicars Cross Golf Club, Tarvin Road, Christleton (CH3 7HN) on Saturday, November 23, from 11am until 2pm, and no appointment is necessary.
Working alongside him will be fellow general antiques and jewellery expert Jane Williams. Together, they can assess anything and everything. Simply drop by with your treasures. And if you like the valuation, you can consign your items to auction on the day. Charles owns Hansons Auctioneers which offers monthly general antique and specialist sales covering everything from jewellery, ceramics and art to whisky, stamps and toys.
Charles, who has 54,000 followers on X thanks to a 20-year TV career, said: “We’re really looking forward to meeting the people of Cheshire. We’ve made some fascinating finds in the area and there’s much more to discover. We can help you discover if you own something special and, perhaps, deliver a windfall.”
Jane said: “I’m looking forward to assisting clients at this new location for monthly valuation events. I have a strong antiques background being a third generation dealer. My 20-year career began in Conwy, North Wales. I have a keen eye for quality items whether it be jewellery, watches or Welsh antiques. Plus, if you have larger items, such as furniture, I will be offering free home visits in the area.”
Charles said: “Don’t be shy, whatever it is we would love to see it. We always give an honest assessment. Many people own items that can excel under the hammer. We regularly uncover surprises. For example, one gentleman tentatively brought a box of objects inherited from his parents to me. Hidden among items of relatively little value was a rare Chinese wine ewer which looked like a small teapot. It sold for £390,000.
“Of course, not everyone owns scarce Chinese porcelain but many people have something of value and simply don’t know it. A small bowl I spotted on a dining table during a home visit turned out to be a rare 16th/17th century Indo-Portuguese mother-of-pearl decorative object made in Gujarat, India. It sold for a premium-inclusive total of £11,713 [£8,500 hammer].
“Everything from militaria, music and sports memorabilia to coins, antiquarian books and jewellery can make hundreds or even thousands of pounds at auction. Gold and jewellery is particularly sought after as gold prices have hit record highs. In October a set of 10 scarce gold and silver Victorian coins hammered at £46,300 from an £8,000-£12,000 guide.
“Every week Hansons uncovers items that have been languishing in lofts, garages and wardrobes, often inherited, that spark global bidding battles. Now it’s time for Cheshire to make waves in the world of antiques.”
