CHESTER and surrounding areas could see flurries of snow and ice over the next two days, according to a new weather warning issued today (Monday, November 18).

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning with large parts of the North of England and North Wales expected to see rain, sleet and snow from Monday evening, and overnight into Tuesday morning.

Temperatures are expected to stay at around 5 degrees over the next few days for Chester and nearby areas, however these could drop to as low as -2 degrees. There is also a high chance of rain throughout this evening.

The weather experts are advising residents that there is a chance of disruption to several services and travel routes including:

  • Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers
  • Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel
  • A chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
  • Some rural communities could become cut off
  • Bus and train services may be delayed or cancelled, with some road closures and longer journey times possible

The warning is currently in place from 7pm this evening until 10am tomorrow morning for Chester and surrounding areas.

The Met Office says: “The most likely scenario is for most of the snow to accumulate on hills, with 5 to 10 cm possible above 200 metres and perhaps as much as 15 to 20 cm above 300 metres. There is a chance of snow settling at lower levels, where 5 to 10 cm would prove much more disruptive - this remains uncertain, but seems most likely across parts of Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

“As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces.”
