AN inquest into the death of a 38-year-old woman has been suspended again by a coroner following a manslaughter probe.

Jennifer Smith, of Birch Grove, Ellesmere Port, was found deceased at her home address on June 1 last year after police officers responded to a call of concern for welfare.

A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of unlawful act manslaughter.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “On Thursday, June 1, 2023, police were called to concerns for the welfare of a woman at an address on Birch Grove, Ellesmere Port.

“Officers attended the scene, and sadly 38-year-old Jennifer Smith was found deceased at the property.

“Following her death, an investigation was launched and a 47-year-old man has since been arrested in relation to the incident.

“The man, who is from the Chester area, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful act manslaughter.

“He has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

“The investigation remains ongoing and further updates will be provided when available.”

An inquest into Miss Smith’s death was opened at Cheshire Coroner’s Court in Warrington on June 28.

However, a hearing back in March led to a coroner suspending the inquest due to the continuing criminal investigation.

In a further hearing at the coroner’s court last Wednesday (November 20), another adjournment of the inquest was requested and granted by senior coroner of Cheshire, Jacqueline Devonish.

She said: “This case should be further suspended pending the outcome of criminal charges.

“A review will take place on March 21, 2025.”
