VAUXHALL MOTORS put Saturday’s disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Avro behind them to beat Chasetown at home on Tuesday night to go two points clear at the top of the Northern Premier League’s West Division.
Jawad Jebrin put Motors ahead on 39 minute and former Chester City winger Kevin Ellison - still going strong at 45 - added a second just three minutes later to secure the three points.
Danny Holmes’ side, who head to Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday, were defeated 2-1 at the vanEupen Arena by Avro thanks to late goals in both halves from Benito Lowe and substitute Kyle Hawley.
Before the game all those inside the ground paid a touching tribute through a rendition of The Last Post followed by a minute’s silence to honour fallen soldiers and recognise the sacrifices of all those who have served.
The opener came just before the break with Lowe heading home.
Just before the hour mark, the big story of the day made his way onto the pitch as Michael Burkey made his hugely anticipated return to action in Vauxhall Motors colours replacing Paddy Kay.
But Hawley scored the all important second goal before Kev Ellison netted for Motors.
Mossley Hill Athletic continue to hold sway at the top of the West Cheshire League’s Division One.
The unbeaten reigning champions edged past Rainhill Town 3-2 to stay a point ahead of nearest rivals FC Bootle, who made it 12 wins from as many starts by beating Runcorn Sports 2-0.
Newton remain a threat and their momentum was fuelled by a 2-1 win over Ellesmere Port Town, which featured efforts from Joe Williams and an own goal. Ollie Welch was on the mark for the Port.
Goals from Matty Morris and Danny Lewis assured Heswall of a 2-0 result over Helsby, and the same scoreline saw newcomers, AFC Knowsley, register their second win of the season at the expense of Capenhurst Villa.
South Liverpool Reserves went down 3-2 to Aintree Villa and it was a similar tale of woe for Vauxhall Motors Reserves, who scored through Dan Duvall in a 2-1 defeat to Chester Nomads, whose scorers were Cam Clark and Sam Spridgeon.
Division Two pacesetters, FC Kirkby, maintained their six-point advantage at the top of the table following a 4-2 success at Marshalls Reserves.
Second-placed Mallaby thrashed West Kirby 6-0, Maghull Reserves were 4-2 winners over Aintree Villa Reserves and Helsby Reserves’ Alex Simpson bagged a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw with South Sefton Borough.
In another 3-3 stalemate, goals from Higher Bebington Kelma’s Dylan Jeffery (2) and Jack Marshall were negated by replies from Hooton’s Joel Whalley, Ben Lennon and Fynlee Eason.
Ollie Dutton (3), Nathan Davidson (2), Cal Spence and Cam Meadows shared the goals as Neston Nomads hammered Runcorn Sports Reserves 7-1.
Neston Nomads’ U23s side assumed pole position in Division Three after a 5-3 victory over West Kirby Reserves, whose marksmen were Sam Johnson (2) and Jack Waddicar.
Fourth-placed challengers, Christleton lost ground following a 0-0 draw with Capenhurst Villa Reserves while Cammell Laird 1907 U23s romped home 6-1 at Willaston, who had Corey Beavan on the scoresheet.
Shaftesbury beat AFC Knowsley U23s 4-2 while James Hawkins and Sean Holt found the net as Heswall U23s beat Great Sutton 2-0.
Following a spate of disappointing results in the Youth Division, Newton SGA hit form in a 9-1 victory against Maghull B.
K-ci Pride netted for Hooton but finished on the losing side after Maghull’s first team triumphed 3-1.
